Education Project Programs

The following programs are planned for development. Work on some of these programs is already in progress; others are at the planning stage.

Also see: Samples of Programs in Development

1. The Book of Language
The purpose of this book is to build a consistent spiritual vocabulary, using all the resources of the English language, informed by the essential, objective Arabic vocabulary of the Qur'an. The concept is an integrated one in which the terms in our spiritual vocabulary are not discrete and isolated but clarify and support other terms and remind us of the essential Islamic truths and perspective. This book is necessary to establish the spiritual and psychological foundation of the other books.

2. The Lights of the Qur'an
Key Passages from the Qur'an in English, Arabic and Arabic transliteration for Study and Guidance, with classical and contemporary commentaries. Through this study we hope to instill a comprehensive grasp of the Quranic perspective on life.

3. The Book of Spirit
The aim of this program is to develop what is most essentially spiritual in our human nature. It will explore and develop the fundamental principles of applied spirituality, including such subjects as attention, self-awareness, intention, presence, mindfulness, remembrance, repentance, contemplation, prayer, and worship.

4. The Book of Names and Qualities
We will include selections from classical and contemporary sources that interpret the Divine Names, and find practical, accessible ways of bringing the meaning of the Names into the lived experience of students.

5. The Book of Traveling
Travel is a spiritual obligation for Muslims, a remedy against narrow-mindedness and parochialism, as well as a blessing both for the traveler and for those who are visited. Some of the world's greatest literature has been created by travelers.

6. The Book of World Literature
This anthology, including prose and poetry drawn from diverse cultures, would provide clear and noble examples for our students to learn from and imitate. This program will provide an anthology of culturally diverse selections, including prose and poetry, exemplifying key human attributes, as well as a more extensive reading list of recommended texts with each entry briefly described to give a feeling for its content and cultural context.

7. The Book of Contemporary Issues
This book will address that we all must face in the contemporary world: secularism and the dominance of Eurocentric culture; materialism and consumerism; globalization; peace and reconciliation; media, advertising and the entertainment industry; science, technology and ethics; animal welfare; environmental issues; information and communications technology; gender; diversity issues; rights and responsibilities; depersonalization and distancing from natural processes; as well as an ongoing analysis of various cultural trends including issues in contemporary art, sports, health, education and leisure.

8. The Book of Learning
The Book of Learning will teach students how to learn through the various activities in the other programs. In this way, the Book of Traveling, for example, becomes a real context through which students can learn the various skills of critical and creative thinking, philosophical enquiry, and effective study and research.

9. The Book of Character
This book will draw upon seerah and classical sources to illustrate the development of character, fine manners, the art of relationship, exemplary conduct, good deeds, and service of others (akhlaq, tahdhib, adab, salihat, khidmah).

10. The Book of Nature
The Holy Qur'an enjoins us to read the Book of Nature as a means of deepening our faith. The porportion, order, and harmony of nature are among God's greatest reminders, especially in light of modern civilization's distancing from nature. We intend to offer the best writings on nature, both scientific and literary, that awaken a sense of wonder and an awareness of our place in the universe.

11. The Book of Creativity
The Book of Creativity will explore the experience of creative people in all fields as a supplement to courses that may be offered in specific arts. This program will also explore the relationship between mathematics, geometry and sacred art, including both visual art and music. However, our concept of creativity will extend beyond its association with the Arts curriculum to embrace Creativity as a strand which permeates all subjects.

12. The Book of World Civilizations
The concept of this program is to to show how our consciousness of God is strengthened and deepened through a study of the sacred arts, literature and exemplary role-models of the great civilizations of the world. Much of this program may incorporate media such as video and sound recordings.
